The Whale Windsock Project

Imagine walking towards your favorite park and seeing what appears to be a fleet of whales and other marine animals in the air. As you get closer, you realize that each marine mammal is actually a uniquely handmade windsock. As you wander around, you overhear students discussing ocean science, conservation, or their experiences making their windsock.

The Whale Windsock Project aims to create an engaging experience that combines physical and virtual media to motivate young people to learn about the marine ecosystem, the ocean, and environmental health through our mascot, the whale. Participants are also welcome to study any other aquatic animals. Hopefully, the experience will inspire the artists and their communities to make intentional decisions in their daily lives to benefit the health of marine life.

The project consists of four main parts:

1. Learning about a marine animal.

2. Creating a 5- to 15-second video presentation of what you learned.

3. Posting your video on social media.

4. Making a windsock representing that animal. Participants will then fly the windsock at various pop-up events and continue to advocate for marine animals by making positive changes in their daily habits that promote ocean health.
